Higher Grade in Market Business Administration, Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Stuttgart (2008), he began his professional career as Head of Purchasing at Adam Opel AG in Rüsselsheim in 1979.

From 1980 to 1993, he carried out diverse duties at Opel and GM Europe and in the USA, becoming World Executive Purchasing Director at GM Corporation in Detroit (USA).

In 1993, he went to work for Volkswagen as Head of the Group’s ‘Electrics/ Electronics’ purchasing area. From 1997 to 2007, he was a member of the Executive Committee of the Volkswagen brand, becoming Vice-President of the Volkswagen Group since 2001. On the other hand, in 1995, he was appointed Executive Vice-President of SEAT, S.A., becoming Director in 1997 and President of the Board from 2007.

He was also President of Volkswagen Navarra and of VGED (Volkswagen Group Spain Distribution) and member of the Board of Directors of Audi AG, FAW Volkswagen (China), Shanghai Volkswagen and Scania AB, as well as the Supervisory Board of Porsche AG. He was also President of the Board of Directors of Volkswagen Brazil and Volkswagen Argentina.

Between June 2009 and July 2012, he was President of ANFAC (Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers) and later a member of it. He also held a leading position on the German automotive manufacturers association (VDA).

In 2009, he was appointed President of the Wolfsburg soccer team, a position which he held until 2018.

Se icorporó a la empresa en 1986, como Director General Adjunto, después de trabajar algunos años como Director Técnico en los astilleros de estructuras marinas de una importante empresa constructora y posteriormente fundar y dirigir SEAPLACE, una compañía de ingeniería especializada en plataformas offshore.

Tiene un Máster en Ingeniería Oceánica por el M.I.T. (Cambridge, Massachusetts) y es Doctor en Ingeniería Naval por la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, en la que posteriormente impartió cursos de doctorado desde 1978 hasta 1984. Completó su formación académica cursando el Programa de Alta Dirección de Empresas (PADE) de IESE Business School en 1990.

En el plano docente es profesor en el Máster deDerecho Marítimo del Instituto Marítimo Español y la Universidad Pontificia de Comillas y del Master del Petróleo de la Escuela Técnica Superior de la Escuela de Minas de la UPM y fue profesor en la Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Navales y Oceánicos de la UPM y del Master del Petróleo de Repsol.

Presidió el Instituto de la Ingeniería de España desde 2012 al 2016 yfue Decano del Colegio Oficial de Ingenieros Navales y Oceánicos de Españadel 2006 al 2010.

Ingeniera Superior de Telecomunicaciones por la UPC y Master en Dirección de Empresas MBA por ESIC. Ha sido Secretaria General de Confebask (organización empresarial de la CAV) de 2011 a 2014.

Ha desarrollado tareas de investigación en los centros tecnológicos Tekniker y Vicomtech, y de administración de sistemas informáticos y gestión de datos en Osakidetza. Fue responsable de informática del Hospital de Mendaro.

A lo largo de su trayectoria política e institucional, ha ostentado el cargo de Parlamentaria en el Parlamento Vasco; Diputada Foral de Guipúzcoa; y Consejera de Transportes y Obras Públicas del Gobierno Vasco.

En el ámbito académico, es Máster Europeo Erasmus Mundus en Diseño y Gestión de Políticas Formativas por la University College of London, y se encuentra finalizando sus estudios de Doctorado en el ámbito de la Sociología del Aprendizaje en la UPV-EHU.
